Focus Magazine Spring 2016

What a great journey creating this magazine has been. Every semester Baylor’s journalism department publishes the Focus Magazine, a student publication run by two journalism students. Spring 2016 semester Elizabeth Starr and myself created this issue, State of the Art. This issue highlights the beautiful art scene surrounding Waco, TX featuring Clint and Kelly Harp of Harp Design Co (from the popular HGTV show, Fixer Upper) and more. Elizabeth kindly took on the role of copy-editor while I took on the task on designing the entire 32-page spread. Check out the step-by-step process of designing the magazine here. I hope this can give any potential designers some insight into the process of creating a publication.

Whitman

An audio, video, and photography project created in London at the historic and mesmerizing St. Dunstan in the East church ruins, Whitman is called Whitman because it’s inspired by Walt Whitman’s lifestyle and writings. The idea is to contrast industry vs. nature. Nature, as expressed in the photo story is brought out through vibrant colors of greenery, feminine nature, and love. Industry is represented in the city of London that surrounds this oasis and penetrates the beauty found within it. Man finds himself in entrapped by the beauty around him and ultimately gives into the beauty and power of nature. Whitman was selected as one of the four photography projects showcased in the Metrogate Gallery in South Kensington, London. Shot, edited, and recorded in London October 2015.
